Foot Care

So with all this lovely time with my foot up (going on my 6th week for those keeping score) I’ve been researching just how the heck I could have ruptured a tendon in my foot.  It is usually associated with sports injury.  Now I realize I do set records on getting to the coffee maker, but really, athletic and me are not usually a word association.  Apparently there is a blood type that is more prone to ruptured tendons, but other than that…..

So my husband kept asking me could it be the quilting.  I denied denied denied.  Didn’t even give it a thought.  Until this week I started reading about quite a few quilters that all seem to be having toe injuries unexplained that require casts etc.  Then I drug out this old picture from where the dog was pouting while I quilted.

Look at how my toes are dug into that carpet.  It’s the other foot that is injured, but none the less look at those toes digging in.   Combine that with the fact that the dog was tossing a toy at them to the point of me loosing toe nails over the damage and it makes one think.  So, what do you all think?  Have you had toe or foot pain while quilting?   Do you think there could be an association?  Have you made changes in your routine?

The next step in my recovery now that the oh so not sexy compression socks are keeping the swelling down, is to add hard soled, good support, flat shoes to start moving around in.  Not nearly as nice looking as my usual boots, but these are my latest step in recovery.

These feature Ariat’s ATS technology which features a gel cushion insole, composite fiber forked shank with three times the stability of a steel shank and is over all supposed to reduce the fatigue and stress in feet, lower legs and back.  I’m thinking I may be wearing something like this for work going forward as well to prevent more injuries.  This is absolutely something I never want to do again.

Hope your weekend is fun filled! I’m back to more movies and books.  Enjoy!

We keep our house really cool, and a long time ago I realized that if I wore shoes all the time in the house, I wouldn’t be quite so cold…I also figured out that I actually felt better (primarily my back…) when I wore shoes all the time, so I’m rarely shoeless anymore. Keen sandals almost all year long, which have a nice footbed and a closed toe, so even if I drop stuff, or 10 year old boys step on me, my toes are protected…

Good luck in your continued recovery!!

Flylady says to put your shoes on everyday…that’s one of her main mantras…when I became a flybaby a few years ago…I started doing it…now I almost can’t stand going barefoot in the house. And, no more broken toes stumping into things.

  3. Jami Says:

Yep…keep those shoes on! My Doc told me being shoeless is extremely hard on our older feet, you need all the support you can get.

Another firm believer in wearing shoes in the house, especially after I was diagnosed with a Morton’s Neuroma in the one foot.

  5. Jan Says:

OK Judy…. you made me google ;-) Thanks guys!! I find this interesting because I just never considered I was putting pressure on my toes. My back yes, toes no. I did not even own hard soled house shoes when this occurred so I feel more than a little constricted by shoes. I did notice that my cuter boots also have this ATS system in it, they just are not flat, but that means I’ll be able to transition to them eventually. I have been wearing these new ones when I get up to eat etc and I can tell a difference. Which is a good thing.

Yes. Quilting barefooted or flip-flops or flimsy fuzzy slippers for long periods of time can really mess up your feet, legs and back. After having a terrible time with plantar fasciitis back in my quilting business days, I went to well supported walking shoes. My feet finally started to slowly heal.

    Best of luck!

sorry. meant or with flip-flops, or with flimsy fuzzy slippers…. ;)

Thanks guys! I think I see some more research targeting good shoe options. In my younger days I always wore reebok high tops… that probably dates me huh?! After the princess was born those just never fit right. I gained an entire shoe size with that kid. So I guess I need to update my shoe knowledge and go forward doing better. I will say I moved around a bit in the new ones last night and did not loose ground for the first time since I injured it. Nice!

Yep Jan, you need good support for your foot and your whole body. Hope you are much better soon.

  11. Jan Says:

Thanks Freda!! Sending you a hug & a prayer!!

I’m sorry you are still having such problems. Did you by any chance buy a pair of the
slipper slides that Costco sold last fall? It took awhile to figure out those were really bothering
my feet/legs. I sure hope you get to feeling better soon. This stinks. It sounds like everyone
suggesting real shoes. All the oldsters that have foot surgery around here are told to get
new balance shoes. Not sure why but they love them. You get to feeling better. You guys
have some adventures to get to when the weather breaks. Hugs to you.

  13. Jan Says:

Thanks Taria! I have not heard of the slipper slides. I usually just went barefoot. I didn’t even own decent slippers. I will say these new shoes have really good support and basically no flex. Apparently it is just what the foot ordered because I did move about the house yesterday more than I have been and had no swelling, muscle spasms etc. It still hurts, but I can move…. which is kind of important for a mom ;-)

Hope James is continuing to improve!!!!

ooooh I had been hoping your foot was better! (((((((hugs)))))

I HATE shoes. Comes from living in Hawaii as a child. But I have been pushing my self to wear them more often. Funny coming from such a shoe addict as me! I love them but when I go in the door off they come! In Alaska no one wears shoes in their houses either just like Hawaii.

So it is definitely a work in progress.

  15. Jan Says:

Becca!!!!!! I was going to email you last night and see if you had made it home!!! I do find it funny that you don’t wear shoes inside. Here I thought you probably had some of those fun ones on all day while quilting!!!! :-)

Yes, I have acquired foot issues since I have started quilting. I even stood on rubberbacked carpet with puzzle mats & wore crocks! What has really helped is buying really good shoes with arches that fit properly. I also added some Dr Scholls personalized orthotics. The best thing is to switch up shoes after a couple hours too. My feet are feeling much better now.

    Thanks Nancy!! Good to know!!!
